Wielka Sowa hike near Wroclaw

We all have a soft spot for nature and hikes; I guess I have too many! 😉 That’s why, when my friends asked me to join them on the 8 am train on a lazy Saturday morning for a quick trip to the mountains, I could hardly resist the temptation and confirmed at once. Continuing my love affair with the Sudetes, my friends & I decided to venture on the other side of the Owl Mountains on the way to Wielka Sowa, the highest peak in the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie) in Lower Silesia.

Wielka Sowa, translating to the Great Owl, is a popular natural attraction near Wrocław. Several marked trails lead to the peak through the Owl Mountains Landscape Park.

Wielka Sowa, being the highest point in the Sowie Mountains, includes a winter skiing spot, which makes it a popular place to ski near Wroclaw in winter. Other popular outdoor activities in the region are hiking, camping & nature viewing. There is an observation tower at the top that offers a 360-degree view of the dreamy landscape around.

How to Get to Wielka Sowa from Wrocław

Snow-covered train station Lower Silesia

The train to Dzierżoniów looks exactly like the one in the photo. Take a KD train from Wrocław to Dzierżoniów. From Dzierżoniów, you take a city bus to Kamionki. The bus stop is 300-400 meters from the train station, so you have to watch out for that part. The hike starts at Kamionki Dolne and ends at Ludwikowice Kłodzkie Station. For this 15 km hike, you will spend about 5 hours; with breaks and a photography session, 6.5 hours should be sufficient.

We took a train from Wrocław to Dzierżoniów and continued by bus to Kamionki. Before setting off, check the latest train and bus connections, as well as the return train from Ludwikowice Kłodzkie. This route starts and finishes at different places, so planning your connections is essential.

Pro tip: Rail routes in Lower Silesia are quite extensive, easily accessible and pretty much affordable for everyone planning a quick day/half-day trip near Wroclaw. Moreover, Koleje Dolnośląskie keeps bringing exciting offers on tickets, and it depends on your requirements. There is a student discount, which cuts down the price by 51% per cent, then there are weekend offers valid for a couple of days, which can come handy if you have a lot of travelling to do, it includes multiple transfers.

And then there is a group discount for people planning a trip with a small group. I recommend that you check for any available offers with the ticket counter person. And good luck in finding the person who can speak/understand English well, because the railway ticket counter is one of those places where foreigners often find themselves vulnerable.

My Winter Hike to Wielka Sowa

Winter hike through snow-covered forest on Wielka Sowa near Wrocław

The hike to Wielka Sowa starts from the foothills of the Sowie Mountains itself, where lies Kamionki. Kamionki Dolne, with a length of about 3.5 km, is a picture-perfect spot ready to greet nature enthusiasts in its warm embrace. The imperial views, some livestock grazing around, and hushed outdoors will greet you from the moment you step into this part of the Sowie Mountains Landscape Park in the Sudetes.

The beginning of the hike is moderately smooth and easy. Winter in Poland is at its peak in January; expect tons of pristine snow covering small streams and puddles. That’s when the hiking pole comes in handy. Though I missed carrying my hiking pole, I recommend that you carry one. It makes your walk easy and hassle-free.

As you advance higher into the mountains, trudging past heaps of snow and the countryside alpine life, you will stumble upon some fascinating views of the woods and the distant Sowie Mountains. The slopes get steeper after a couple of kilometres, and the walk grows more demanding with every step. Fog and mist get thicker, but the views get thoroughly dreamier until you finally make it to the Wielka Sowa top.

Wielka Sowa translates to “The Big Owl”, and so you will find a majestic one at the top. Besides the fancy-looking owl sculpture and the observation tower, there are plenty of signboards, some tented shelters, and a barbecue place. There is a historic observation tower at the summit. Opening depends on the weather and operating conditions. Check the official Wielka Sowa tower information before your hike.

Finally, after completing a great hike, we reached the same train station, Ludwikowice Kłodzkie, where we finished our Owl Mountains winter hike. Read the story here in case you missed it!

Practical Tips for Hiking Wielka Sowa in Winter

A mountain shelter near Wielka Sowa near Wrocław

1. Wear proper hiking boots. Trails covered in snow can become slippery, particularly near the summit. Take trekking poles and consider microspikes if icy conditions are expected.

2. Check the weather before setting off. Conditions at 1,015 metres can be very different from those in Wrocław. Dress in layers, carry gloves and a hat, and allow extra time if there is snow or ice.

3. Carry enough food and water. Don’t assume you’ll find somewhere open to buy refreshments at the summit. Check the availability of facilities before your hike and pack accordingly.

4. Check the observation tower’s opening hours. The tower may close in adverse weather, and winter opening arrangements can differ from those in summer. Check the official Wielka Sowa tower information before your trip.

5. Plan your return journey in advance. If you’re following the route described in this article, remember that it starts and finishes at different places. Check your train and bus connections before leaving Wrocław, especially if you’re travelling on a weekend.

6. Keep an eye on daylight. Winter days are short, and snow-covered trails can slow you down. Download your route beforehand, keep your phone charged and leave enough time to finish the hike before dark.

  2. Hello!
I’m thinking of doing this hike and I have two questions.
    1. Did you make it back and forth from Wrocław on the same day, or is it necessary to stay in the town for a night?
    2. How demanding is the trial? Would I need special snow shoes or equipment?
Thank you very much for posting this. In the two years I’ve been living in Poland it’s been hard to find information in English about hiking tourism.
    Cheers!

  4. Great post and, look amazing! I have the same questions as Sara above (especially number 2!), please could you advise?

  5. Hello Charlie, Sorry for the delayed response. It’s been awhile since I logged into WP. So your answers according to me are:

Yes, it is possible to do this hike and come back same day. We did it. But the connections can get a bit tricky. Like I mentioned in the post, to reach the hike starting point, you have to take train and eventually bus. Bus stops are located outside the train station.

This trail isn’t easy for sure, demanding for sure. So be prepared physically and mentally. Good hiking gears like, boots, spikes, and pole are crucial. Hope you make it there. Do share your experiences. Thanks

  6. Hello Fiorz! It’s always nice to have some experience during summer before going for a full blown winter hike. Also, it gets dark pretty quick during winter, and plenty of snow in Owl Mountains, hence it should be your call based on experience. Kids love snow 🙂 Good luck for your hikes. Do share your thoughts on the same
