Adršpach Day Trip from Wrocław: The Ultimate Guide to Czechia’s Rock City and the Polish Table Mountains

Private Adršpach and Table Mountains tour from Wrocław

A quick escape near Wrocław is all you need, and nature’s variety will leave you amazed. Fewer day trips in Lower Silesia combine spectacular landscapes, geology, and cultural variety quite like a trip to Adršpach and the Table Mountains.

On a spontaneous Majówka long weekend, we drove south-west towards the Czech Republic. Beyond Wałbrzych’s coal-shaped hills, the rolling terrain of the Sudety Landscape Park began to turn cinematic. The towering cliffs, dense forests, and, amid them, the unique sandstone rocks began to dominate the horizon. 30 mins later, I found myself standing beneath some of the most extraordinary rock formations in Central Europe. dršpach first feels magical, almost unreal.

Located 47 kilometres apart, Adršpach and the Table Mountains are two landscapes with different appeals. One rewards with panoramic viewpoints, wooden walkways, steep climbs, and endless views stretching into Czechia and the Karkonosze Mountains. The other presents giant stone towers, narrow passages, emerald lakes and hidden corners. Adršpach has inspired generations of climbers, poets, artists and filmmakers. Parts of The Chronicles of Narnia were filmed in the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks. If you want the magic of a fantasy world, this is where you need to be.

Where is Adršpach Rock City?

Tall sandstone cliffs in Adršpach Rock City

Adršpach is located in north-eastern Czechia, close to the Polish border and within the Adršpašsko-Teplické Rocks Nature Reserve. For travellers based in Wrocław, it is one of the best nature trips in Lower Silesia. Even better when combined with Szczeliniec Wielki in the Table Mountains or Kudowa-Zdrój!

The reserve covers nearly 18 square kilometres and belongs to the Central Sudetes, a landscape shaped by sandstone, forests, ravines and rock towers. It sits neatly between Lower Silesia and the Broumov region.

Why Adršpach Is One of Central Europe’s Most Remarkable Landscapes

Along the southwest Polish border, two protected areas narrate this remarkable geological story. Szczeliniec Wielki, the highest peak of the Table Mountains National Park in Poland, and Adršpach-Teplice Rocks in the Czech Republic.

Adršpach rocks are distinguished for the gigantic sandstone labyrinths that emerged from the ancient Cretaceous Sea. This sea covered much of present-day Central Europe (including Poland and Czechia) nearly 90 million years ago.

Layers of sand settled on the seabed, eventually forming enormous rock deposits. Tectonic forces later lifted these sediments above sea level, while frost, rain, wind and rivers slowly sculpted them into the unique landscapes we see today.

The result is one of Europe’s largest sandstone regions, stretching across the Central Sudetes and the Broumov Highlands. In contrast to the jagged peaks of the Alps or the Tatras, these mountains are characterised by massive rock towers, deep ravines and labyrinth-like corridors that often resemble streets and squares carved by nature itself.

The best part is, it’s quite accessible. Unlike high mountain trails, these landscape parks don’t require technical hiking skills. Most visitors with an average fitness level can comfortably enjoy a trip to Adršpach from Wrocław in a single day.

What Makes Adršpach Rock City So Special?

Emerald lake in Adršpach-Teplice Rocks

Located close to the Polish border, Adršpach has become one of the finest nature day trips to Adršpach from Wrocław. It pairs well with Szczeliniec Wielki in the Table Mountains or the Skull Chapel in Kudowa-Zdrój.

The Emerald Lake

The emerald lake near the entrance was once a sandstone quarry. It later flooded and turned into one of the most photographed spots in Adršpach. The water is clear, still and almost theatrical against the pale rock walls. The first impression, this is where the day trip from Wrocław begins to feel worth the journey.

The Gothic Gate

Built in 1839, the Gothic Gate marks the symbolic entrance into the most atmospheric part of Adršpach Rock City. It sits between tall sandstone walls, and from here, the route gets narrower, older and detached from ordinary hiking trails.

The Lovers

The Lovers, or Milenci, is the tallest and most recognisable rock tower in Adršpach, rising over 81 metres above the trail. From the right angle, it resembles two figures leaning towards each other.

Mayor and Mayoress

Mayor and Mayoress among the classic formations of the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks

Starosta and Starostová, usually translated as the Mayor and Mayoress, are among the classic formations of the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks. Their upright shapes resemble two formal figures standing together. They also belong to the area’s long rock climbing history.

Mouse Hole

Mouse Hole is the narrowest passage in Adršpach Rock City, only about 50 centimetres wide. A short, slightly awkward, but memorable alley.

The Great Waterfall

Hidden in the rock city, the Great Waterfall drops through a narrow gorge and brings a colder, almost cave-like atmosphere to the Adršpach hike. In winter, it can freeze into a dramatic icefall.

Narnia filming location near Wrocław

Adršpach is widely known as one of the landscapes connected with The Chronicles of Narnia. The Gothic Gate, sandstone corridors and forested passages carry that fantasy aura. For travellers searching for a Narnia filming location near Wrocław, Adršpach is the place to be.

Walking Through Adršpach: What to Expect

Family inside Adršpach Rock City day trip from Wrocław

Adršpach is not a difficult mountain hike, but it is not just a flat walk either. The route varies from a calm lake to climbing steps, passing between sandstone walls and descending the steep stairs.

Most visitors need around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the main Adršpach trail at a relaxed pace. Add more time for photos, the boat ride queue, and peak season rush at the Teplice Rocks.

Blue Trail Around the Lake

The blue trail around the lake is about 1.5 km long, mostly flat and easy. It is a gentle introduction before the main rock city begins. The views are excellent for very little effort: clear water, pale sandstone and forest reflections.

Main Green Trail

A sandstone rock in Adršpach Rock City day trip from Wrocław

The green trail is the main Adršpach Rock City route. It covers around 3.5 km and includes the Gothic Gate, the Great Waterfall, Mouse Hole, the Lovers, and the Mayor and Mayoress.

The trail includes steps, narrow sections and uneven ground.

Yellow Trail to Teplice Rocks

The yellow trail through Vlčí rokle connects Adršpach with Teplice Rocks. It is around 3.5 km long and has wooden walkways, forested trails and wetland sections.

For a full day inside the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, this is a great option. For an easy day trip from Wrocław, especially with Szczeliniec Wielki or Kudowa-Zdrój, I would focus on the main Adršpach trail.

Combining Adršpach with Table Mountains Day Trip

Szczeliniec Wielki Table Mountains top view

For me, the finest version of this is Adršpach paired with Szczeliniec Wielki (Polish Table Mountains day trip). They sit roughly 47 km apart, close enough to combine, yet different enough to make the day feel complete. Szczeliniec Wielki offers height and panoramic views. Adršpach gives imposing rocks and a fantasy landscape. One is panoramic. The other is cinematic.

Morning: Szczeliniec Wielki (Table Mountains, Poland)

On the Polish side, Szczeliniec Wielki rises to 919 metres above sea level. It forms the highest point of the Table Mountains. The climb begins with stone steps through the forest before opening towards one of the most unusual summit trails in Poland.

At the top, wooden walkways lead between sandstone blocks, viewpoints and named rock formations such as Camel, Monkey and Great Grandfather’s Armchair. The trail also passes darker, colder sections with names like Hell, where narrow rock corridors hold the shade even on warm days. Near the summit, the mountain shelter adds a welcome pause before continuing through the rocky labyrinth. The views stretch across the Stołowe Mountains, the Czech borderlands and the deep folds of the Sudetes.

Afternoon: Adršpach Rock City

The Great waterfall inside Adršpach Rock City trip from Wrocław

The drive from Szczeliniec Wielki to Adršpach takes around one hour, depending on traffic and the border route. Adršpach opens up with views of water, forest and sandstone walls. The lake is followed by the Gothic Gate, waterfalls, towers and narrow passages that pull you deeper into the rock city. After the openness of Szczeliniec Wielki, this feels like a compelling theatrical experience.

Adršpach and Skull Chapel Day Trip

Skull Chapel in Kudowa-Zdrój

Optionally, Adršpach can also be combined with Kudowa-Zdrój and the Skull Chapel in Czermna. This version replaces the mountain climb with one of Lower Silesia’s strangest cultural stops.

The Skull Chapel, or Kaplica Czaszek, is a small ossuary chapel lined with human skulls and bones. It was created in the late eighteenth century by the priest Václav Tomášek, who gathered remains from victims of wars, epidemics and local graves. Inside, the space is quiet, compact and, in a way, unsettling.

Kudowa-Zdrój itself adds a gentler contrast. The spa park, mineral water pump room and elegant health-resort atmosphere make a great start. This route is best for travellers interested in nature, local history and dark tourism in Poland.

For families or casual walkers, Kudowa-Zdrój and the Skull Chapel combination is the best. For photographers, hikers and geography lovers, I recommend Szczeliniec Wielki.

How to Get to Adršpach from Wrocław

A tourist at the panoramic viewpoint in Adršpach Rock City

Adršpach is a great day trip from Wrocław, but the easiest and most comfortable way is by car or private tour. The drive takes around two hours.

Public transport is tricky as you may need to combine regional KD trains from Wrocław towards Wałbrzych, Mieroszów or the border area, then continue with Czech connections towards Adršpach. It can work for independent travellers, but it is not the best option for a full-day trip in Lower Silesia, especially if you want to include Szczeliniec Wielki or Kudowa-Zdrój.

During weekends, May holidays and summer holidays in Poland, Adršpach gets busy.

Check Adršpach Online Tickets and Parking Before You Go

Adršpach limits the number of visitors per day, usually to around 4,000 people. In summer, on weekends and during school holidays, tickets can sell out in advance. If you are travelling from Wrocław or another faraway place, check availability first and book your ticket online.

Online tickets are usually cheaper than buying at the counter. The same applies to car parking, which can also be reserved online. It saves money, avoids stress, and protects your day.

Best Time to Visit Adršpach from Wrocław

Spring and autumn are the best times to plan the Adršpach trip. Spring brings fresher forest, stronger waterfalls and sharper sandstone after rain. Autumn gives softer light, colour and fewer people on weekdays. Summer is great if you start early and book ahead. Majówka and school holidays get busy. Winter looks beautiful, but paths can be slippery.

Adršpach Practical Tips

Wear shoes with a good grip. The green trail is manageable, but steps, damp stone and slippery passages can be tricky. Toilets are near the entrance. There are no toilets or trash bins inside. Remember, drones are not allowed.

Can You Visit Adršpach Without a Car?

Adrspach day trip from Wrocław by train

Adršpach has a train station close to the entrance, making it an attractive option. Bear in mind, there are no direct train connections from Wrocław.

A self-guided public transport trip usually means travelling by regional train towards Wałbrzych, Mieroszów or nearby border towns, then switching to Czech rail or bus connections. This can be a good adventure if Adršpach is your only destination for the day.

For a combined trip with Szczeliniec Wielki, Kudowa-Zdrój or the Skull Chapel, public transport is not a practical option. The places are close by car, but not always well connected for travellers trying to fit everything into one day. This is where a private day trip from Wrocław makes sense. You avoid complicated connections, save time, and keep the day focused on the places worth seeing.

My Favourite Way to Experience Adršpach Rock City

My first visit happened during Majówka, one of those long weekends when leaving Wrocław feels almost necessary. The road south-west slowly changed after Wałbrzych. The industrial hilly neighbourhoods made way for forests and open slopes. That familiar feeling of crossing into another region without travelling very far!

Read about my first experience here.

Adršpach surprised me because it did not feel like a standard nature park. The landscape kept changing constantly. Lake, gate, gorge, tower, waterfall, narrow paths, strange rock faces.

That is why I like pairing it with the Szczeliniec Wielki hike. The day starts with the wide mountain views of the Table Mountains Landscape Park, ending at the Czech rock city. The same sandstone landscapes appear in two completely different forms.

For Wrocław expats, this trip is a must-do.

I offer this as a private day trip from Wrocław for travellers who want to experience Adršpach with a local tour guide in Wrocław.

This is one of my favourite nature-based trips from Wrocław because it delivers real variety. You get Poland, Czechia, sandstone geology, mountain views, forest trails and one of Central Europe’s most unusual rock landscapes in one day.

Lower Silesia is also known for its dreamy castles and palaces, with 90 of them featured on the European Route of Castles and Palaces. Interested in discovering the fairytale castles of Lower Silesia? Don’t Miss These featured on the European Route.
