About Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia Soli „Wieliczka”)

Ranked among the oldest and most breathtaking salt mines in the world, Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia Soli „Wieliczka”) is a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting on the outskirts of Kraków in southern Poland. The salt mine, embedded with striking visuals, exhibits a vast and interactive history of mining techniques in medieval Europe, among many other prominent artworks, hundreds of meters underground.

Accounting for a whopping 1 million tourist arrivals to Poland every year, Wieliczka Salt Mine, located on the rock salt deposit, is a 3h drive (285 km) from Wrocław and 13 km from Kraków city. It is a must-visit for every tourist visiting Kraków and Wrocław – two top city break destinations in Poland.

Continuously mined since the 13th century, the Wieliczka Salt Mine produced table salt until 1996 as one of the oldest operating salt mines in the world.

Together with Bochnia Royal Salt Mines, Wieliczka is among the earliest and most important European industrial operations and officially holds royal status to this day.

Due to falling salt prices and mine flooding, commercial salt mining was discontinued at Wieliczka in 1996. Today, the Wieliczka Salt Mine serves as an official Polish Historic Monument.
